Spring has sprung

The Osoberry (Indian Plum), one of our earliest blooming native shrubs, is in full bloom right now. Their light spring-green leaves glow brightly when most other plants are still getting buds set. We discovered this huge, beautiful specimen out in the woods down the hill from the house. After some grooming, clearing and underplanting the area where it is at will be quite the feature for the later woodland garden. A large single-trunk alder stands nearby, along with some ancient, mossy stumps in the background.

This bush is probably 10-12 feet high. The lower parts have been long pruned off by the deer, giving it a great vertical vase shape. It will stand alongside the trail that will circle the property eventually.
